More outdoors, more exercise, more fun

New outdoor facilities at Peter Pan School inaugurated

Inauguration of the outdoor facilities of the Peter Pan School by Mayor Weilmann

After several years of construction, the new outdoor area of the Peter Pan School in Wolfsburg's Nordstadt district has now been inaugurated. In a total of three construction phases, a school garden was created, a green classroom was set up and an extensive play area including a play ship and water mud facility was installed.

"We can finally inaugurate the new outdoor facilities - this is a real milestone for the Peter Pan School and therefore for all pupils," says a delighted Mayor Dennis Weilmann. "It's a great signal for Wolfsburg that we can meet the needs of the pupils and support their development with these play and exercise areas."

"The Peter Pan School sees itself as a sports and exercise-friendly school. This focus can now be fully taken into account again," adds Iris Bothe, Head of the Department for Youth, Education, Integration and Social Affairs. "It is particularly noteworthy that the pupils were involved in the design of the outdoor facilities and that they now have an area that meets their expectations and needs."

The section-by-section conversion had been planned since 2014 and was approved in several council decisions. The city has made a total of around 1.1 million euros available for this. Project coordination and contact construction management was carried out by the Green Division, while a landscape architecture firm was commissioned to implement the project.

There were several reasons for the redesign measures: Firstly, there were originally not enough play facilities and the existing ones were no longer usable due to their age. Secondly, one play area had to be closed due to pollution - it was therefore necessary to develop other areas in order to provide sufficient exercise and play opportunities for a total of 145 pupils in 19 classes.

At the inauguration, the pupils were visibly delighted with the new school playground, which was created to meet their needs. The pupils with special needs in the area of intellectual development now have enough space to play and move around, which is particularly important for them. The schoolyard was designed to help the pupils develop their skills and talents. Here, the city council's Green and School divisions used the expertise of the school and the pupils and created an optimal result through participation.
