However, it has developed during a period of enormous economic boom. Without the constraints of a historic core, this has resulted in a settlement structure that is a special feature. Not only architectural highlights such as Alvar Aalto's cultural center or Hans Scharoun's theater are therefore protected buildings, but also entire housing estates such as Steimker Berg or the residential courtyards of the city center from the early 1940s, to name just a few examples.

According to § 10 of the Lower Saxony Monument Protection Act, construction measures on monuments are subject to approval. The planned measure should be coordinated in advance in a discussion with the lower monument protection authority.
