Pioneering cultural buildings
With its founding in 1938, Wolfsburg is one of the very few new cities of the 20th century. Founded on July 1, 1938, the city has often been a pioneer of urban development trends in the young Federal Republic during its short exciting history. The city is a characteristic example of planned urban development, its history closely linked to the cyclical developments of the automotive industry. Thus, Wolfsburg can almost be considered a museum of 20th century urban planning ideas, while at the same time uniting a large number of exciting individual buildings.
Since the mid-1950s, Alvar Aalto's Kulturhaus, Hans Scharoun's theater building, the art museum and the Autostadt have been built along the central city axis. Up to the phæno, a groundbreaking cultural project was realized here practically every ten years, setting impulses as a pioneer development.
Architectural mediation in Wolfsburg
The fact that in the "new" city of Wolfsburg urban development and architecture follow special parameters and meanwhile decisively shape the external image, is taken into account by the city of Wolfsburg by creating a separate department for the topic of architecture communication and architecture mediation on July 1, 2001: the Forum Architecture. The aim of this institution is, on the one hand, to consciously raise Wolfsburg's profile as a city of architecture and, on the other hand, to provide the residents of this city with basic information on architectural culture.
