City Museum in M2K
Visitors can learn more about the building history of the 700-year-old Wolfsburg Castle and its former inhabitants on tours of the city museum.
Wolfsburg Castle, a complex of the North German Renaissance, gave its name to the young city. You can learn about its history on tours of the city museum. In the Schlossremisen, the museum paints an overall portrait of Wolfsburg: from the estate economy to National Socialist planning and reality to the "economic miracle" and today's big city.
Sometimes rather garish exhibits such as a completely preserved hairdressing salon from the 1950s or a VW welder's suit, flip books, audio and multimedia stations with eyewitness accounts, hits and castle-historical animations convey the city's historical development.
On the second floor of the museum is the documentation on the victims of National Socialist tyranny, which is maintained jointly with the Institute for Contemporary History and City Presentation.
In a former brewery barn of the Wolfsburg estate not far from Wolfsburg Castle, the collection of agricultural implements and machinery provides insights into rural life in this region before the founding of the Volkswagen plant and the city.
With its events - for example, knowledge-packed as well as entertaining exhibition tours, interactive programs and specific children's offerings - the city museum is aimed at visitors of all ages and educational backgrounds. As an extracurricular place of learning, it offers numerous points of contact for teaching various subjects, school types and grade levels. Pupils can either be accompanied by experienced museum educators on tours and thematic workshops or go on their own discovery tour through Wolfsburg's history. In this way, the castle's history can be experienced in a staged play, or the history of objects can be researched and experienced in creative activities.
