City Archive

The municipal archive was institutionally founded in 1976 and developed into a functional and modern municipal archive. In view of the still young history of the city, the archives focus on the records of the city administration after 1945, as well as the historical holdings of the 20 districts that have belonged to Wolfsburg since its incorporation in 1972. The municipal archive primarily serves the legal security of the archiving body, the City of Wolfsburg, but also scientific research, especially historical research, and the political orientation of the citizens. The legal framework of the archive's work is determined by the Lower Saxony Archive Act of May 25, 1993, as amended.

An opened magazine cabinet with documents

In contrast to the traditional municipal archives of other large cities, the Wolfsburg municipal archive does not have rich medieval document collections and official book holdings from the early modern period. Nevertheless, the archive includes, among other things, more than 16,000 files of the city administration, files of the formerly independent city and municipal administrations of today's districts, approx. 7,000 maps and plans as well as large stocks of photographic and pictorial material. These are supplemented by collection holdings, for example the estates of prominent Wolfsburg citizens, or holdings created for special documentation. In addition, the city archive has film and video collections and collections of digital information and sound carriers.

Another focus of the archive is the collection of Wolfsburg's local newspapers, most of which can be viewed on microfilm in the institute's visitors' room with the help of a reader. Lined up end to end, the holdings of the city archive cover 1.4 shelf kilometers. A specialized library with over 5,500 volumes and the entire available primary literature on Wolfsburg is available for the institute staff's own research as well as for users to consult.
