Animal welfare
No person shall cause pain, suffering, or harm to an animal without reasonable cause.
Anyone keeping an animal must feed, care for and house it in a manner appropriate to its species and needs.
Above all, species- and behavior-appropriate husbandry also includes finding out about appropriate nutrition, care and housing for the animal and ensuring that the necessary requirements are met. It is also important that the animals can move around in a species-appropriate manner.
The veterinary office monitors compliance with these animal welfare regulations in order to protect the life and well-being of the animals. We work together with the animal shelter of the city of Wolfsburg.
Various activities are subject to licensing in connection with animal welfare, and these businesses are also regularly inspected. We are also there for you in the area of "private animal husbandry".
Animal protection
According to Section 11 of the Animal Welfare Act, a permit is required for the following activities to ensure that this can be done preventively:
- Commercial keeping, breeding or trading of vertebrate animals (except breeding and keeping of farm animals)
- Commercial maintenance of a riding or driving business
- Keeping animals in an animal shelter or similar facility
- Exhibiting animals, e.g. in a zoological garden
- Training dogs for third parties for protection purposes
- Organization of animal fairs
- Breeding or keeping laboratory animals; carrying out animal experiments
- Commercial pest control
Further information on the requirements for the granting of a permit in individual cases can be obtained from the Veterinary Office.
All businesses that require a permit under Section 11 of the Animal Welfare Act, all livestock farms including horse farms and all facilities where animals are slaughtered, animal transport businesses and circuses are regularly inspected by the veterinary office to determine whether the animal welfare requirements are being met.
Anyone who keeps an animal privately must comply with the Animal Welfare Act.
Paragraph 1 of the Animal Welfare Act states: "The purpose of this Act is to protect the life and welfare of animals out of man's responsibility for them as fellow creatures. No one may inflict pain, suffering or harm on an animal without reasonable cause.
Unfortunately, it happens again and again that animal owners do not comply with this law.
If you observe a violation of the Animal Welfare Act, you can report it to the veterinary office. Give us a call (Tel. 05361 28-2141) or send us the completed form by e-mail to the Veterinary Office at the following address veterinaeramt@stadt.wolfsburg.de.
