Road construction and project coordination
The Road Construction and Project Coordination Division (formerly the Civil Engineering Office) is concerned with the planning, construction and maintenance of efficient and safe traffic facilities. These are roads, squares, sidewalks and bike paths, railroad tracks, stops, bridges, tunnels, noise abatement systems, signage, markings, traffic lights, street lighting, street drainage systems, fountain systems and bicycle racks.
Wolfsburg traffic in figures
The road network of the city of Wolfsburg covers 667 kilometers with 118 bridges and one tunnel. Traffic is controlled by 143 traffic lights. During the hours of darkness, around 15,200 lights illuminate Wolfsburg's streets, paths and squares. The cycle path network has a length of 245 kilometers and is being continuously expanded to increase the recreational value and as an environmentally friendly alternative to driving. To beautify the small and large squares, 37 fountains are in operation.

- Bicycle traffic coordination
The traffic planning
The central task of traffic planning is to ensure mobility for all road users in Wolfsburg. In addition to motor vehicle traffic, local public transport (LPT) as well as bicycle and pedestrian traffic must also be taken into account.
In addition to determining basic data, for example by means of traffic censuses or household surveys, traffic planning is involved in the preparation of development plans, carries out preliminary and variant studies for traffic infrastructure projects, and prepares and updates traffic concepts. In addition, it is involved in the development of concepts for city-wide accessibility by public transport and develops measures to promote bicycle and pedestrian traffic. But our team also deals with special traffic issues such as the control of traffic lights, signposting and traffic safety.
The tasks of traffic planning are thus extensive and complex. It therefore plays a central, formative role. Our aim is always to ensure that traffic is handled in a way that is compatible with the city and the environment, and that urban planning, ecological, social and economic aspects are taken into account in addition to traffic requirements.
The road design
The employees in the road planning team are responsible for the preparation of ready-to-use planning documents for all public traffic areas in the city of Wolfsburg. This includes the planning for district and state roads in the city as well as for the road network within the city with the development of residential and commercial areas. In addition, special emphasis is placed on the design of squares and other representative locations, as well as on the barrier-free expansion of bus stops with the aim of increasing the attractiveness of these stops and thus of the public transport service. The expansion of a comprehensive network of bicycle paths is also a particular focus and is being worked on intensively. All these measures are complemented by lighting planning, which is committed to illuminating the city according to the latest technical possibilities.
In addition to these planning activities, the team also deals with questions relating to the traffic development of building plots in the course of building applications and the approval of individual measures such as access roads to plots of land, and is also the coordination point between the city and the supply and disposal companies.
Further information
The Road Construction and Operations department aims to keep traffic restrictions caused by construction measures as low as possible. The project managers of the realization are the competent contact persons for this.
As the road authority, we are responsible for maintaining traffic safety. To this end, the roads, paths, squares and so on are inspected on a regular basis. Any damage found is repaired by our own crews or by annual contractors. Larger rehabilitation measures are determined by the Pavememt Management System and other factors and are handled by the construction management in the construction maintenance department.
Specialists* are on hand to ensure the safe operation of traffic signals, street lighting, track systems, fountain systems, and signage and markings, and to ensure the smooth flow of traffic and operations.
As road authorities, we serve road users in order to guide them safely and, as far as possible, without major traffic disruptions along Wolfsburg's streets, roads and squares.
In addition, we are responsible for issuing permits to break up and cross roads.
