It includes 24 bronze bells with a total weight of 3,000 kilograms. The largest bell weighs about 350 kilograms and the smallest still 8 kilograms.

The melodies were selected in 1956 in the course of a competition with the participation of the citizens of Wolfsburg. The first prize at that time was awarded to Louis Kummer, who suggested three of the five melodies and also submitted extensive explanations of them.
Initially, the melodies were played from a punched tape by an electro-mechanical control system. An electronic system replaced the old one during the general overhaul in 2001. Today, the melodies are stored on electronic chips and can be called up in any order by a timer.
