The Porschestrasse
The heart of Wolfsburg
On July 7, 2004, the Wolfsburg City Council approved the Porschestraße master plan as the basis for the redesign of the entire length of the pedestrian zone. After around 3 ½ years of construction, Porschestraße Mitte was completed with a total area of 16,500 m² with new high-quality city parquet made of natural stone, an avenue of plane trees and the new glass roof on Hugo Bork Square at a cost of around EUR 11 million.
The aim of the renovation of Porschestraße was to create a central boulevard that encourages people to stroll, communicate and shop. The high-quality city parquet made of natural stone paves the way for the new Porschestraße Mitte. The established and much-loved avenue of plane trees on Porschestraße Süd continues in the middle section of Porschestraße, inviting people to stroll in the greenery. Atmospheric light installations awaken interest in an evening stroll through the city. The light not only provides safety, but also enlivens the public space by accentuating it. The old and new play areas in Porschestraße offer relaxation and exercise for children of all ages. In addition to the exercise elements in the first construction phase, the water landscape and the much-loved wolves and chessboard provide entertainment in the second phase.
As early as 2004, some owners set a good example and, together with the city of Wolfsburg, realized the first section of a glass canopy. This project was continued in 2009 / 2010, making it possible to shop and stroll around even more, regardless of the weather. The municipal construction project encouraged and motivated several property owners to modify and modernize their properties. The reduction of the existing pavilions has significantly improved crossability and visibility within the pedestrian zone. With the support of the business development agency, local tenants have found new stores on Porschestrasse. Wolfsburg's shopping mile has once again become an attractive and competitive platform for retailers, service providers and restaurants.
The glass roof, designed by the Braunschweig-based architecture firm Schulitz Partner and visible from afar, has made the pedestrian zone significantly more attractive and more inviting. The four tree-like steel supports fit perfectly into the alignment of the avenue of plane trees. In the middle below the roof, the new chessboard is protected from the rain. The established events, such as the wine festival or the Christmas market, can also be held here regardless of the weather.
The pedestrian frequency determined by the Frankfurt consulting firm Jones Lang LaSalle improved enormously after the completion of the new Porschestraße: in 2009, the figure was still 3,270 visitors per hour; after the conversion, Porschestraße reached a record figure of 4,245 customers in 2010. In a comparison of the 170 most important shopping streets in Germany, Wolfsburg is ranked 43rd, and even 6th in Lower Saxony.
The most important side access area to the inner-city pedestrian zone - the Kaufhofpassage - has also regained the importance it deserves. Within around three months in 2010, the Kaufhofpassage from Meckauer Weg to the junction with Porschestraße was also upgraded and adapted to the high-quality appearance of the new Porschestraße.
