Status
The new Sonnenkamp urban development area between Nordsteimke and Hehlingen, currently the largest in the city with a total area of around 150 hectares, will be built in several phases just five kilometers from the city centre.
Together with private developers and housing associations, around 3,000 residential units are to be built in Sonnenkamp, thus making a decisive contribution to Wolfsburg's housing construction offensive.
The new residential development area with its various forms of housing will provide space for several thousand new residents.
Single-family, semi-detached and terraced houses will be developed and built for ownership and for rent. A wide range of rental apartments will also be built - including at least 25% in the rent-reduced segment.
The city of Wolfsburg is developing and opening up plots of land - e.g. in the future Quartier IV - for around 600 residential units for development with detached, semi-detached, chain, courtyard and terraced houses as well as apartment buildings.
All residential buildings will be constructed in up to five distinctive quarters and will adapt to the existing topography of the site, which will include generous green spaces for play, sport, recreation and experiencing nature in the "green center".
The planned infrastructure facilities are there for both existing and new residents. This will also encourage the new residential area to grow together with the existing districts. The "Sonnenkamp Campus" is planned in the connecting new center - the so-called "Neue Mitte". In addition to a new elementary school with canteen and outdoor facilities, a sports hall, a daycare center, possibly a community center and local shopping facilities will also be built here. Social facilities for senior-friendly and intergenerational living as well as small-scale service facilities are also planned. There are also to be further daycare centers close to residential areas in the other districts.
The traffic connection to the area is planned via the existing Kreisstraße 5/ Nordsteimker Straße or Kreisstraße 111 and the ring road development for the development area leading off it. In addition, the Alternative Green Route will provide a local public transport service for the new development area.

Participation formats
- Consultative participation in the further planning process for the Sonnenkamp development area
- Discussion of key issues from the different perspectives of citizens, politicians, administration and investors
- Transparency and comprehensibility of the decisions made
"Together, the city and the investor attach great importance to the involvement of future residents and current residents of the neighboring districts, as well as to involving local politicians at an early stage. The involvement of the advisory board therefore contributes in particular to the transparency and comprehensibility of the decisions made on the development of Sonnenkamp." Dennis Weilmann |
"Sonnenkamp will become a family-friendly and nature-oriented residential area. It is therefore particularly important to me to involve all interested citizens in the entire development of Sonnenkamp through various participation formats and to include their suggestions in the upcoming planning right from the start." Kai-Uwe Hirschheide |

"I am delighted that the Sonnenkamp advisory board enables representatives of the local community to actively participate in the design process of the overall project." Philipp Kasten |
"It is a great feeling to see that participation and voluntary commitment are valued by those responsible in the administration and the investors, because I have experienced a great deal of acceptance, respect and openness on the Sonnenkamp advisory board." "As a member of the Sonnenkamp advisory board and local mayor, I have been involved in the development of our largest construction area in the city for five years. The circle of citizens from the existing districts of Hehlingen and Nordsteimke, investors, administration, politicians and interested parties who want to actively help shape their future home, meet regularly to exchange ideas and discuss a wide range of different topics. Children and young people are also regularly involved. The different perspectives enable the people who already live there to be involved and the wishes and ideas of future residents to be taken into account. This exchange combines knowledge and experience from the history of the old villages and creates acceptance and a confident view of the common future. I really enjoy my work on the Sonnenkamp advisory board, we get a first-hand impression on site, directly at the construction site and regularly discuss the neighborhoods themselves, the infrastructure, the green spaces and the leisure facilities. Even the name "Sonnenkamp" is a result of the ideas and suggestions from our advisory board. The success of such a committee is largely dependent on the seriousness with which we listen to each other. Not every idea can be implemented and sometimes there are simply different ideas. It is a nice feeling to see that participation and voluntary commitment are valued by those responsible in the administration and the investors, because I have experienced a great deal of acceptance, respect and openness on the Sonnenkamp advisory board. When you develop a new and such a large construction area and thus create a home for many people, everyone, both the investors and the urban planners, have one goal: the new residents should feel comfortable and the new area must fit in well with the existing structures. There are certainly many analyses and expert opinions on the needs and the various possibilities. By setting up this advisory board, the city of Wolfsburg has created a citizen-oriented opportunity for a direct exchange with a broad group of people outside of the city hall and politics. Simple, direct and effective." Ira von Steimker |
"We are looking forward to the next chapter in our lives - a new, modern home! The location couldn't be more perfect, in the city center in no time and still in the countryside. We've already met a few neighbors, including some familiar faces. It will be a great environment for our children with lots of opportunities and friends to play with. Our older daughter Maya was even involved in the planning of the playground through the children's advisory council, so it's a playground with a personal connection. The anticipation is great!" Ines Amara |
"As a future resident in Sonnenkamp, I am particularly pleased to be able to accompany and actively shape the realization steps in Quartier 3 and the further planning of the development area."
Frank Stein
Advisory board member and future resident of Quartier III
The plans for Sonnenkamp always have both the existing residents in the surrounding districts and the newcomers in mind and should also be supported by them.
The Sonnenkamp Advisory Board was therefore founded at the beginning of 2018. Since then, the work on the Sonnenkamp development area has been brought to life in 3 to 4 meetings a year, with the participation of 18 people from the various interest groups of residents, development area applicants, politicians and municipal experts. The first residents, who will move into their homes at the end of 2023, are now also represented on the advisory board. The advisory board has successfully accompanied both the planning and the implementation of the residential development area to date as a committee with an advisory function over the entire five-year period to date.
Children's building sign and first street name sign for Quartier 3 in Sonnenkamp unveiled
Children's advisory council and primary school pupils from Hehlingen involved
On October 4, there were two special events in Quarter 3 of the Sonnenkamp development area. On the one hand, the children's advisory council of the city of Wolfsburg hung up a new, self-designed children's building sign and on the other hand, the first street name of the neighborhood was unveiled, which is the result of a children's participation with pupils of the third and fourth grade of the elementary school Hehlingen from last year.
It is not the first children's building sign from the Children's Advisory Council that was hung up last Wednesday. The Children's Advisory Council had already created such a sign during the 2019/2020 term of office, which had been hanging on Nordsteimker Straße since June 2021. This year, the Children's Advisory Council designed another sign, which primarily refers to the planned neighborhood playground with the motto "Space". It was hung in Quarter 3 of the Sonnenkamp development area to illustrate how important it is to involve even the youngest children in the design of their surroundings.
At the same time, the first street name sign in Quarter 3 was unveiled. This moment not only marks the beginning of a new phase for the development area and its future residents, but is also the result of a participatory process involving the third and fourth grade pupils of Hehlingen elementary school. Last year, the pupils had the opportunity to suggest names for the future streets in the neighborhood. These and other suggestions were then voted on by the Sonnenkamp advisory board, once again with the participation of four young representatives from Hehlingen elementary school, and the result was ultimately presented to the Barnstorf/ Nordsteimke local council. The council then decided on the final street names. In future, the main street of Quarter 3 will be called "Sonnenkamp Allee", a street name that was penned by the children.
The cooperation between the municipal children and youth office and the municipal Sonnenkamp project coordination is intended to serve as an example of the participation of children in municipal projects. The City of Wolfsburg remains committed to strengthening the voices of children and young people in urban planning and development processes and to taking their unique perspectives into account.
