Anyone who drives a vehicle as defined by the Electromobility Act (EmoG) can receive privileges when participating in road traffic.
However, the privileges only apply if the road traffic authorities have issued corresponding regulations and may therefore vary from city to city.
Electric license plates can only be issued under special conditions. You can find more details on this in the "Prerequisites" section.
- the electric license plate can be used for all vehicles of the vehicle classes M1, N1, N2 (but only up to a total weight of max. 4250 kg) as well as L3e, L4e, L5e, L7e and
- have an alternative drive or energy source, for example vehicles with fuel keys 0004 and 0015
- an electrically powered vehicle
- a pure battery electric vehicle
- an externally rechargeable hybrid electric vehicle or a fuel cell vehicle,
- a pure battery electric vehicle: a motor vehicle with a drive system
a) whose energy converters are exclusively electric machines, and(b) whose energy storage devices are rechargeable at least from outside the vehicle,
- an externally rechargeable hybrid electric vehicle: a motor vehicle with a drive system which has at least two different types of
a) energy converters, at least one of which is an electric prime mover, and(b) energy storage devices, at least one of which is electrically rechargeable from an energy source external to the vehicle,
- a fuel cell vehicle: a motor vehicle with a drive system whose energy converters consist exclusively of the fuel cells and at least one electric prime mover,
- energy converters: the components of the motor vehicle propulsion system that permanently or temporarily convert energy from one form to another, which are used to propel the motor vehicle,
- Energy storage: the components of the motor vehicle drive system that store the respective forms of energy used to propel the motor vehicle.
- In the case of an externally chargeable hybrid electric vehicle, an electric license plate may be issued only,
- if the certificate of conformity states that the vehicle is
- has a carbon dioxide emission of no more than 50 grams per kilometer driven, or
- its range is at least 40 kilometers using only the electric propulsion engine. This applies to hybrid vehicles with fuel codes 0008, 0010, 0012, 0014, 0019, 0022, 0024, 0025, 0026, 0027, 0028, 0029, 0030, 0031, 0033.
- Electric license plates may not be assigned for
- Export license plates
- short-term license plates
- permanent red license plates, so-called dealer license plates
- Identity card or passport with registration certificate
- Vehicle registration document / registration certificate part I
- previous license plate(s)
- Proof of valid motor vehicle liability insurance via the eVB procedure with receipt of a seven-digit electronic insurance confirmation number (eVB). Only required when registering the vehicle with a new owner.
- Proof of a valid general inspection in accordance with § 29 StVZO (German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations).
- Main inspection report: The test report on the last main inspection must only be submitted if the due date for the next main inspection is not stated in the vehicle registration document or the registration certificate Part I.
- Vehicle registration certificate / registration certificate Part II in conjunction with the COC or certificate of conformity
- SEPA direct debit mandate for collection of vehicle tax (if the vehicle is more than 10 years old)
If applicable, additionally required at the time of application:
by proxy/agent*:- issued power of attorney (see below for form) including personal document of the grantor of the power of attorney and the authorized person
- Current excerpt from the commercial register, current business registration, power of attorney of the managing director or authorized signatory or personal appearance of the managing director/authorized signatory and their identity card/passport.
- Excerpt from the register of associations; identity card or passport and power of attorney of the designated representative(s).
- Proof of affiliation to a chamber (for example: Chamber of Physicians, Chamber of Notaries, Chamber of Veterinarians, etc.) or
- Certificate of the tax office
for companies under civil law:
- Complete overview of the partners (as a rule, partnership agreement)
- Power of attorney and declaration of the person to whom the registration is to be made (confirmed by signature of all partners) as well as the identity card / passport of the partner to whom the registration is to be made.
- Consent of the legal guardian (usually both parents) and designation of an authorized delivery agent
Fees will be charged in accordance with the Fee Regulations for Road Traffic Measures (GebOSt) from an amount of 27.90 euros. The specific fee amount can only be determined on site based on the submission of the complete documents.
Additional costs for the creation of license plates are not included and will not be charged by the vehicle registration authority.
If there are any fee arrears, these must be paid on the day of registration in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Registration Requirements Act, otherwise registration of the vehicle will be refused.
If there are tax arrears, these must be paid at the relevant main customs office. Registration can only be carried out after this.
