Identity card

  • General information

An ID card is required from the age of 16. It is possible to apply from birth.

If you move house, you must change your address beforehand. The address will also be changed on the chip.

The submission of fingerprints has been mandatory since 01.08.2021. This makes the document more forgery-proof.

It is also possible to reload a qualified electronic signature. This reloading does not take place at the Citizens' Services, but in a so-called trust center.

All first names are listed on the ID card.

You can obtain atemporary ID card if your previous ID card has expired or become invalid and you need a new one immediately (for example, when traveling abroad in Europe or for banking matters).

The ID card with chip was introduced on 01.11.2010 on the basis of the law on ID cards and electronic proof of identity (ID card law).

  • Required documents

    • Your "old" identity card or, if issued for the first time, your child's identity card/passport

When applying for a temporary identity card you will need the following documents:

    Information on passport photos:

You can use the ID terminal to take the biometric photo and scan your signature. This will save you time and money. The use of the terminal costs 6.00 euros. Of course, your own biometric passport photos will still be accepted and processed by the photographer or passport photo machine.

    Important:
For applications up to the age of 16, one parent must be present at the application in addition to the minor. A declaration of consent (see forms) and the identity cards/passports of both parents are required from the custodial parent who is not present. Information on the PIN letter procedure and the online function

Every applicant, regardless of age, received the PIN letter when applying at the registration office. The previous age limit has been lifted, but the online ID card remains deactivated for persons under the age of 16. From 17.02.2025, the blocking password will no longer be included in the PIN letter; it will be handed over when the document is issued.

You can check online whether your ID card is ready for collection or you will receive an email if you provided your email address when you applied.

Keep your PIN letter safe and sound. If your ID card is lost or stolen, please report the loss or theft to the Citizens' Services or a police station. These authorities will then also block your online ID card.

If you wish to have your online ID card blocked for other reasons, you can also block it by calling the blocking hotline. The telephone blocking hotline can be reached on the toll-free number 116 116.
