Smart City for your pocket

Providing information, saving time and making everyday life easier - these are the basic ideas for the Wolfsburg app. Ultimately, all users should benefit from the app, whether they live in Wolfsburg or are visiting. Since the turn of the year, the Wolfsburg app has had new, helpful features - thanks to the biggest update to date. Mobile parking is now integrated, so that parking tickets can be paid conveniently via the app. Also new: a widget for comparing gas station prices. The trash pickup function has also been updated. If you select the appropriate settings, the app will send you a push message in the morning on the day of collection to remind you to put the garbage can out. Previously, it was only possible to be reminded the day before emptying.

"The clear, helpful and easy-to-use Wolfsburg app is an important building block for the Smart City Wolfsburg," explains Mayor Dennis Weilmann. "We are developing the app bit by bit, constantly optimizing its functions and adding useful features. With this app, we are creating real added value for Wolfsburg."

"The Wolfsburg app is intended to be the link between urban society and the smart city of Wolfsburg. We want to develop services from existing data and use them to save time and make life easier for people living in and visiting Wolfsburg every day," adds Jens Hofschröer, City Councilor for Digital and Economic Affairs.

"The citizens who have tested the functions since the app release have been instrumental in helping us to further develop the Wolfsburg app in the interests of citizenship and user-friendliness. This feedback continues to be very valuable for us and flows into the optimizations," notes Dr. Sascha Hemmen, Head of the Digitalization and Economy Department.

While just under six percent of all parking tickets were paid for digitally in 2019, the share was already 16 percent last year. There have been more than 5,000 downloads during the time of the app's previous soft releases. The Wolfsburg app can be downloaded free of charge for iOS and Android from the app stores.

The Wolfsburg app launched in fall 2021 with a colorful bouquet of features. Already integrated back then: The city's defect report, weather information and important notes on infrastructure, such as locations of e-charging stations or bus stops. In 2022, the app was continuously enhanced with additional functions, such as speed camera information at the start of the week, a link to online appointments, and sports news about VfL Wolfsburg and the Grizzlies Wolfsburg. Now the app is taking the next step with handyparking, an English language output and further improvements.

The Wolfsburg app was developed as part of the Model Projects Smart Cities funding program of the German Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Construction and KfW. In addition, the project was further promoted via the #WolfsburgDigital initiative.
