Ten container rooms for Eichendorff elementary school
Alternative rooms required in the course of refurbishment
Due to the increasing number of children starting school, it will also be necessary to set up additional classes at primary school locations for teaching and all-day care in the coming years. Following the remediation work, six of the containers will remain available for joint use as classrooms and all-day rooms as well as subject classrooms and all-day rooms to accommodate the increasing number of pupils at Eichendorff Primary School. The other four will be used for relocation during conversion work at other schools.
The proposal to purchase the school containers will now go to political consultation, starting with the planning and building committee on December 5. The city council will then make a decision at its meeting on December 18.
The background
In the course of planned construction work at Eichendorff Primary School, targeted indoor air measurements revealed increased concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). PCBs were previously used in building materials, but are now known to be hazardous to health.
Based on the measurement results to date, it can be assumed that children and teachers in the affected rooms were exposed to a small amount of additional PCBs. The school management and teaching staff were informed throughout the entire process. In the opinion of the public health department, no damage to health is to be expected. In terms of preventative measures, the affected rooms are now being completely renovated.
