Great opportunity for our city
Wolfsburg bids to host the European Women's Championship 2029
"The bid to host the UEFA Women's EURO 2029 is a great opportunity for Wolfsburg to once again prove its strength as a sports city. Women's soccer inspires millions - we want to bring this enthusiasm to Wolfsburg," explains Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann.
"VfL Wolfsburg has been a national and international flagship of women's soccer for years. In addition, the infrastructure around the Volkswagen Arena offers the best conditions for participating teams and all fans," says Dr. Tim Schumacher, Managing Director of VfL Wolfsburg-Fußball GmbH.
"By hosting the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011, we have impressively demonstrated that Wolfsburg is very well suited as a host city," adds Henry Eichberg, Head of the Mayor's Coordination and Civic Participation Department, who is in charge of the bid on behalf of the city. "We also want to show that we are a very good host in 2029."
Subject to the pending decision by the city council, the first step will be to send a binding letter of intent to host the event and the corresponding bid documents to the German Football Association. The DFB will then continue the internal process of determining the venues and applying to the European Football Association UEFA for Germany to host the 2029 Women's European Championship. A decision by UEFA is not expected until the end of next year.
Hosting the UEFA Women's EURO 2029 would be a milestone for Wolfsburg. The city was already able to successfully position itself as a host city for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2011 and welcome visitors and media representatives from all over the world. Thanks to the impressive success of the VfL Wolfsburg women's team, the city enjoys an excellent reputation in women's soccer both nationally and internationally.
In addition to the sporting significance, the bid will bring numerous benefits for the city. The EURO 2029 is expected to attract thousands of visitors to Wolfsburg, which would strengthen the local economy - especially for the catering, retail and hotel sectors. In addition, the international attention is likely to boost the city's appeal to tourists in the long term. The UEFA Women's EURO 2029 could also offer the opportunity to promote women's soccer and grassroots sport, inspire young people and strengthen the sense of community in the city's society. Wolfsburg's positioning as a modern and future-oriented city would also be sustainably supported by an event of this magnitude.
