"Important clarity, but painful cuts"
City of Wolfsburg on the Volkswagen settlement
The City of Wolfsburg is reacting to the agreement reached today between the employee representatives and company management regarding the future direction of Volkswagen.
"The agreement provides everyone with much-needed and important clarity on how Volkswagen will proceed in the future in view of the major economic challenges." After months of uncertainty, people in our city have been desperately waiting for this clarity.
It is pleasing that there will be no compulsory redundancies and that employees now have clarity. This is good news, because it is the people of Wolfsburg and the region who have made Volkswagen a successful global corporation.
The job cuts - including at the Wolfsburg site - will nevertheless be painful for the Volkswagen sites. The reduction of jobs in all areas will be noticeable. And the agreements reached also mean noticeable cuts for the employees, who are thus making a major contribution to securing the future of Volkswagen. This must be highly appreciated.
I would like to thank the negotiating partners for reaching a compromise after a tough struggle. "The employer and employee sides have thus once again demonstrated that in a crisis at Volkswagen, solutions are sought together constructively in order to make the company fit for the future," said Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann.
Golf farewell
After 50 years, the Golf will be leaving Wolfsburg - at least temporarily. It will only return to its new home city with the introduction of the all-electric Golf variant. "Wolfsburg and the Golf have a special relationship - the people here are proud of the Golf, which has inspired an entire generation," says Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann.
Taking off in 2025
It will now be important that today's decisions are accompanied by significant investments in the main plant in Wolfsburg. Only with appropriate investments will the transformation process at Volkswagen succeed and the economic stability to overcome the current challenges be achieved. The city of Wolfsburg will continue to accompany us along the way as a reliable partner. Wolfsburg has the potential to become one of the most modern plants in Europe.
"Now, at the end of the year, we need to draw strength from the agreement reached and take off in 2025 for a positive future at Volkswagen and at the Wolfsburg site as the heart of the Volkswagen Group," explains Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann.
Despite the agreement involving cutbacks, today's decision makes one thing clear: Wolfsburg is a stronger business location and will remain so in the future!
