Signs of remembrance and responsibility

City invites to commemorative event

To mark the 80th anniversary of the death march of the prisoners of the Laagberg subcamp to the Wöbbelin death camp, we invite you to a commemorative event on Friday, April 4, at 1:45 pm at the historic camp site, today's Breslauer Straße (opposite the Schlesierweg junction).

With this event, we are expressly committing ourselves to an active culture of remembrance and sending a clear signal for the preservation of historical responsibility. "It is our mission to keep history alive and to engage with it," emphasizes Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann. "With this commemorative event, we are showing that we are aware of our responsibility. The victims and survivors of this incomprehensible suffering remind us to stand up for a society without anti-Semitism, racism and populism. Especially today, it is more important than ever to stand up together for democracy and humanity."

In addition to Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann, the French ambassador H.E. François Delattre, the Italian consular agent Chiara Felicelli, the former president of the Amicale Internationale KZ Neuengamme and the former French diplomat Jean-Michel Gaussot will also take part in the commemoration ceremony.

We kindly ask participants to use the public parking spaces in the vicinity of Breslauer Straße.

A worthy place of remembrance

The planned memorial site at the former Laagberg subcamp is a forward-looking sign for dealing with the past. The city of Wolfsburg will create a dignified place of remembrance and learning here, which will remind future generations of the events and encourage reflection. Construction is scheduled to start in 2026.
