Naming in marriage

The name in the marriage depends on the nationality of one partner. You can obtain specific information about this from the Wolfsburg registry office.

There are many possibilities for the use of a name in marriage according to German law:

1. common married name

  • You can choose a common married name when you get married
  • This can be the birth or family name of the husband or wife
  • You do not necessarily have to choose a married name at the time of marriage, but can do so at any time during the marriage without any time limit

Note: The determination of a married name is irrevocable.

2. separate naming

  • If you do not want to use a married name, you will continue to use separate names. This means that you both continue to use the name you had when you married.

3. double name

  • If a married name is chosen that is not your name, you can add or prefix your name to the new married name.
  • You alone can then use a double name
  • The determination of the double name does not necessarily have to take place at the time of the marriage, but can also be made at any later time without any time limit.
  • The determination of the double name can be reversed once again
