    Registration of marriage

You want to get married? Congratulations! We are pleased that you have decided to say yes to each other in Wolfsburg.

Before your marriage can take place, you and your future spouse must personally register your marriage. The Wolfsburg registry office is responsible for registering the marriage, provided that at least one of the engaged couple has their main or secondary residence in Wolfsburg.

The registration of the marriage can only be made by prior appointment.

In addition to valid identification papers, various documents - depending on marital status, nationality and other personal circumstances - are required for registering the marriage.

Please make an appointment for a consultation by telephone so that we can explain to you - personally tailored to your concerns - which documents you need to obtain.

  • Birth

Congratulations on the birth of your child

Here we explain which documents you need to take with you to the hospital, which official procedures you can take care of before the birth of your child, and a few things about the naming of your child.

If the mother of the child is single or legally divorced, she is always the only person on the child's birth certificate. If the father is to be included in the birth certificate, he must submit an acknowledgement of paternity - this must be recorded by a notary public (registry office, youth welfare office or notary public). The personal presence of the father and the mother is necessary. An acknowledgement of paternity can also be made before the child is born. Despite the acknowledgement of paternity, the mother retains sole custody and the child bears the surname of the mother. Joint custody can be declared at the Jugendamt.

If one of the parents is a foreign citizen, please call the registry office and ask in detail which documents are necessary for the certification of the birth of your child.

  • You are married

Then the registry office needs your marriage certificate (original) and your two birth certificates (original).

  • You are divorced and a German citizen

You need a current marriage certificate with divorce decree (original) or marriage certificate and divorce decree with final decree and your birth certificate (original).

  • You were born or married abroad

Please ask at the registry office what documents/deeds are needed.

  • You are single and a German citizen

Please take your birth certificate (original) with you to the hospital.

  • Child first name

Of course, your child should get the most beautiful first name, but for this there are some things to consider - it must be a gender-specific first name, i.e. for boys a male first name, for girls a female first name. Gender-neutral first names, e.g. Luca, have been allowed to be chosen as the sole first name for some time. If you have any questions about first names, please do not hesitate to contact us.

  • Last name of the child

If the child's parents are married and have determined a common married name, their child will automatically also be given your married name.

If the parents do not have a common surname, they decide together which surname the child should have. This surname then also applies to the other joint children.

If the mother is not married, the child will have the surname that the mother had at the time of birth.

If the child is to have the father's surname, paternity must be acknowledged and the name must be granted.

Since 01.11.2018, persons who are subject to German law and have several first names can redetermine their order by declaration to the registry office. A change in the spelling of the first names and the addition or omission of first names is not permitted.

The declaration can be submitted to the registry office of the place of residence. This declaration becomes effective upon receipt by the registry office of the place of residence. If the birth was not recorded in a German registry office, the registry office that keeps the life and marriage partnership register is responsible. If this does not apply to you, the registry office of your place of residence is responsible.

You must present your passport or identity card, your birth certificate and, if applicable, your marriage or civil partnership certificate.

A fee is charged for receiving the declaration. Please ask the responsible clerk for the amount of the fee.

Death register - notification and registration of deaths

When a family member has died, it means a lot of bureaucratic work.
The first step is to report the death to the registry office of the place of death by the third working day following the death at the latest. The Wolfsburg registry office is therefore only responsible for deaths in the city of Wolfsburg.

Since in most cases a funeral home is commissioned, it is advisable and sensible to leave the notification of the death to the funeral home. You only need to give him the necessary documents.

The funeral director then submits the documents to the registry office, the death can be recorded and the death certificates can be issued.

    Required Documents:

In addition to the death certificate from a doctor, further documents are required for the certification of the death, depending on the marital status and nationality. You can obtain information on this from your contact persons.

    Fees:

There is an administrative fee for the issuance of a death certificate and each additional certificate. Please ask the responsible clerk:in for the amount of the fee.

Documents for social security and pension purposes are free of charge.
