Floodplains
According to Section 6 of the Federal Water Act, floodplains are areas between surface waters and other areas that are inundated during floods or that are used for flood relief or retention.
The state government is obliged to designate as floodplains at least those areas in which a flood event is statistically expected to occur once every 100 years and those areas that are used for flood relief and retention. The purpose of this designation is to keep existing retention areas free and to ensure that flood water can flow away without causing damage.
The legal requirements must be observed in the floodplain (see Section 78a of the Federal Water Act).
Exceptions require the approval of the lower water authority.
Natural or identified floodplains must be maintained as retention areas even without formal designation.
In the area of the city of Wolfsburg, the following floodplains have been designated by ordinance to date:
- Flooding area Aller A39 to state border
- Aller floodplain to the west of the A39 motorway
- Flooding area Allerkanal and tributaries
- Flooding area Kleine Aller
- Flooding area Mühlenriede

Floodplain of the Schunter
There is a provisionally secured floodplain along the Schunter in Wolfsburg and the district of Helmstedt. With the publication in the Lower Saxony Ministerial Gazette No. 17 of 12.05.2021, the floodplain has been provisionally established in its current form.
The regulation of the floodplain is currently still being prepared by the responsible lower water authority of the district of Helmstedt. Once it has been published, the ordinance will be announced in the official gazette of the city of Wolfsburg. In addition, the overview of ordinances will then be supplemented on this page.
From the day after publication in the Lower Saxony Ministerial Gazette, the prohibitions and approval requirements for floodplains will apply in accordance with Section 78 ff. of the Water Resources Act. You can therefore use the following interactive map of the state of Lower Saxony to view all applicable floodplains, including those that have been provisionally secured."
