The international driving license is only necessary if you want to drive a motor vehicle outside the EU.
The international driver's license is an additional document to your national driver's license. It is intended to make it easier for the police abroad to check whether the driver is authorized to drive a motor vehicle.
There are two different types of international driver's license.
- One is the international driving license according to article 7 and annex E of the International Convention on Motor Traffic of 24.04.1926. This is intended for the following countries: Argentina, Chile, Iceland, Egypt, India, Iraq, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Syria, Turkey, Vatican City and the United Kingdom.
- For all other countries, the international driver's license is valid according to art. 41 and Annex 7 of the Convention on Road Traffic of 08.11.1968.
- Current biometric passport photo (printed as a picture, no digital picture possible).
- Current driver's license (Important: If you have an existing paper driver's license, you must first convert to the EU card driver's license).

IMPORTANT: If you have not yet converted your previous driver's license to the new EU card driver's license, this is required as part of the application process in accordance with sections 25a and 25b of the German Driver's License Ordinance (FeV). The fees for this are an additional 25.30 euros.
