On March 01, 2008, the electronic insurance confirmation (eVB) was introduced for retrieval.
This eliminates the obligation to present an insurance confirmation according to the old model (so-called double card). Instead, insurers provide their customers with an insurance confirmation number (7-digit alphanumeric code). With the help of this VB number, the registration authority can check whether a processable insurance confirmation has been deposited for the holder.
For further information, please refer to the fact sheet of the German Insurance Association (GDV)
You can find out how long an eVB number is valid in the letter from your insurance company. Regardless of this, the eVB number can only be used once.
If the owner and the policyholder differ, the insurer must note this in the eVB number. The type of registration process to be carried out (e.g. seasonal license plate, short-term license plate, etc.) must also be entered correctly in the eVB number. Other information such as the vehicle identification number (VIN) is optional, but must be correct when entered.
