Re-registering a vehicle after moving to Wolfsburg

If you have moved to Wolfsburg, you are required to register your vehicle here. You will then receive a new registration certificate Part I with your new address.

It is possible to assign a license plate of your choice to the vehicle for a fee - provided the license plate is free and available. Information on availability, as well as the possible license plate combinations, can be found on the Internet under Wunschkennzeichen - Online.

If the vehicle is registered to a company or association, the same applies, for example, after a relocation of operations.

Do not forget:

Since 01 March 2007, for a private person, the vehicle can only be registered in the district of the main residence.

Since 01.10.2019, there is the possibility for private individuals to perform this service online. Please note that different requirements apply here.

• Relocation within Germany to Wolfsburg

You have moved to Wolfsburg. You are now registered here with your primary residence. A secondary residence in Wolfsburg is not sufficient.
If the vehicle is registered to a company or association, the company or association must have a registered office or branch in Wolfsburg.
If you have moved within Wolfsburg, see change of address in the registration certificate Part I.

• Moving from abroad to Germany

If you have moved to Germany from abroad, please select the appropriate service:

• if you have moved within the EU :

Registration of a used vehicle imported from abroad in the EU.

• if you have moved to the EU :

Registration of a used vehicle imported from non-EU member state.

• No change of keeper

You are the owner of the vehicle and want to remain the owner.

• Identity card or passport with registration certificate
• Vehicle registration document / registration certificate part I
• Proof of a valid general inspection in accordance with § 29 StVZO (German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations)

Main inspection report: the test report on the last main inspection must only be submitted if the due date for the next main inspection is not stated in the vehicle registration document or the registration certificate Part I.

If you want to change the license plates must also be submitted:

• Proof of valid motor vehicle liability insurance via the eVB procedure with receipt of a seven-digit electronic insurance confirmation number (eVB).
• Vehicle registration certificate / registration certificate part II / operating permit (EC certificate of conformity or full expert opinion for vehicles not subject to registration)

If the vehicle is still registered and you keep your previous license plate, you do not need to submit the ZBII.

• License plates (if a change of license plate is desired)
• SEPA direct debit mandate for the collection of the vehicle tax

If applicable, additionally required at the time of application:

by proxy / representative:

• issued power of attorney (form see below) including personal document of the grantor of the power of attorney and the authorized representative

for companies (GmbH, AG, OHG, KG, UG haftungsbeschränkt, foreign legal form):

• Current excerpt from the commercial register, current business registration, power of attorney of the managing director or authorized signatory or personal appearance of the managing director / authorized signatory and their identity card / passport.

for associations:

• Extract from the register of associations; identity card or passport and power of attorney of the designated representative(s).

for freelancers

• Proof of membership of a chamber (e.g. medical association, chamber of notaries, chamber of veterinary surgeons, etc.) or
• Certificate from the tax office

for companies under civil law:

• Complete overview of the partners (as a rule, shareholders' agreement)
• Power of attorney and declaration of the person in whose name the registration is to be made (confirmed by signature of all partners) as well as the identity card / passport of the partner in whose name the registration is to be made.

For minors: (see forms below)

• Consent of the legal guardian(s) (usually both parents) and designation of a person authorized to accept service of documents

Fees are charged in accordance with the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt) from EUR 23.60 if you keep your previous license plate or EUR 27.10 for re-registration if you apply for a Wolfsburg license plate. The actual amount of the fee can only be determined on site on presentation of the complete documentation.

Additional costs for the creation of license plates are not included and are not charged by the vehicle registration authority.
If there are any outstanding fees, these must be paid on the day of registration in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Registration Requirements Act, otherwise the registration of the vehicle will be refused.

If there are any tax arrears, these must be paid to the responsible main customs office. The vehicle can only be registered after this has been done.
