The original plan was to change the traffic routing again at the end of the second construction phase (May 31). As the current traffic routing has significantly eased the situation in Steimker Berg in particular, there will be no changes.
"Unfortunately, we noticed during the first construction phase that the traffic regulations were not always followed," explains Jens Krause, Head of Citizen Services. "We are still seeing creative attempts to drive around the construction site. For this reason, the current traffic routing will remain in place until the start of the fourth construction phase on July 15, as it is much safer for the residents of Steimker Berg."
High through traffic caused complaints
During the first construction phase (between mid-February and the end of March), Steimker Berg was still open to residents. However, this route was also used by people who were not residents of Steimker Berg. The resulting high volume of through traffic led to a large number of complaints from local residents. In response, we took various measures to improve the situation. For example, the signage and traffic routing in Steimker Berg were adapted during the work. At the same time, through traffic was controlled in cooperation with the police. However, the most effective change was and is the traffic routing introduced with the second construction phase in mid-March, including the full closure of Nordsteimker Straße out of town.
This means that the detour route in the outbound direction will remain in place until July 15. The one-way system will remain in place in the inbound direction. If you start in Steimker Berg and want to drive towards Nordsteimke, you can only turn onto Nordsteimker Straße via Ahornweg. The special traffic solution for buses operated by Wolfsburger Verkehrsgesellschaft (WVG) also remains in place.
Work is on schedule
Meanwhile, construction work on the comfort cycle path along Nordsteimker Straße is progressing intensively and is on schedule. Earthworks and the laying of frost and gravel base layers are currently underway. Stones for sidewalks and dividing strips are also being laid. The paving work for the footpaths and the asphalting of the cycle path surfaces are also starting. The fourth and final construction phase is planned from July 15. This will require a full closure of the junction of Erich-Bammel-Weg and Nordsteimker Straße. The city will provide information about the traffic regulations that will then apply in good time.
