Positive groundwater balance

Due to the abundant rainfall in the winter half-year 2023/24 and the lack of a dry period in the summer so far, the City of Wolfsburg does not currently intend to issue a general order for water protection by restricting irrigation and water extraction. The groundwater levels and the water levels in surface waters have eased in recent months, and in some cases it has been possible to compensate for deficits in the groundwater caused by the previous dry years.

Nevertheless, the city asks that water be used sparingly and sustainably. Using collected rainwater for watering gardens is one way of saving water. In addition, rainwater storage also helps to buffer heavy rainfall events. It is also recommended to water the garden in the cooler evening or morning hours to minimize evaporation losses. Drip irrigation is also recommended instead of watering the entire area with a lawn sprinkler or similar.

Sustainable water management supports water bodies as part of the natural balance and thus protects the basis of life for humans, animals and plants.
