Insights into the craftsmen's quarter

Exhibition on renovation projects on display in the civic hall

From October 22 to November 15, the exhibition 15 Years of Urban Renewal in the Handwerkerviertel redevelopment area will be on display in the Bürgerhalle. Before and after photos illustrate the redevelopment process and show the development of the central city quarter. The exhibition can be visited during the regular opening hours of the town hall.

The Handwerkerviertel has been undergoing renovation and modernization for 15 years. Successful projects include the redesign of Poststrasse, the new Ostfalia University buildings in conjunction with Robert-Koch-Platz and the renovation of the former public order office. However, the exhibition not only looks back, but also forward. After all, the redevelopment is far from complete.

Craftsmen's quarter as a trademark

"To date, around seven million euros have been invested in the craftsmen's quarter," emphasizes Silke Lässig, Head of Urban Planning and Building Consultancy. "And with great success: the term 'Handwerkerviertel' has established itself as a trademark and is an attractive urban quarter. The investments made by Ostfalia and private owners are particularly noteworthy."

The craftsmen's quarter, which takes its name from the many craftsmen's houses from the 1950s, covers the area between Lessingstraße and Bahnhofspassage and between Heinrich-Nordhoff-Straße and Kleiststraße. The 22-hectare area has been designated as a redevelopment zone since 2009 and has been part of the Growth and Sustainable Renewal - Designing Livable Neighborhoods funding programme since 2015. The redevelopment project will run until 2029. The exhibition was put together by the Urban Planning and Building Consultancy division from 15 years of redevelopment work.
