Together Famous

The Städtische Galerie im Schloss Wolfsburg turns 50

50 years of the Städtische Galerie im Schloss Wolfsburg: this milestone anniversary will be celebrated with a major exhibition opening on October 20. The anniversary exhibition shows a cross-section of over half a century of contemporary art from the museum's collection.

The presentation therefore offers more than just an overview of the most important artists and artistic movements since 1945. A good example of this is the artwork "Ringo" by Uwe Lausen. Created in the 1960s, it depicts the Beatles' drummer at the time. In the exhibition, it is arranged together with a Braun radio-phono transistor device, also from the 1960s. The device is symbolic of the rapid development of radio technology at the time, which also led to the rapid spread of the Beatles' number 1 hit "She loves you" in Germany in 1964. The song can of course also be heard in the exhibition.

Famous = We

The play on words in the exhibition title emphasizes the importance of the reception of art for society and contemporary history. While "famous" means famous, the term also includes "us" and thus emphasizes the "we" - i.e. the community. For it is the latter that can elevate an object to the status of art or not. "The works of art on display will enter into an exciting dialog with everyday objects and rarities, as well as curiosities and contemporary documents from the past 50 years. Art can thus be seen as both a creative motor and a mirror of society. The aim of the Städtische Galerie im Schloss Wolfsburg has been to convey this in over 300 exhibitions to date," says Marcus Körber, director of the museum.

Course of uniqueness

highlights the diversity of the collection in a special exhibition concept. World-famous works such as the artwork "Bomber" (1963) by Gerhard Richter or the snoring plaster paintings (2012) by Thomas Rentmeister exemplify the extraordinary range of the collection. Visitors can experience the works on display throughout the anniversary year in a tour with changing focal points and references to regional art and city history. The route leads through the interior of Wolfsburg Palace as well as through the outdoor and park areas, where analog and digital works of art can be seen. This also includes a look into the future with computer games and video art in the exhibition space DEIN.RAUM.
