Sustainable building and living

Ground-breaking ceremony for "Woodscraper" in the Hellwinkel Terraces

The construction phase for the Woodscraper in Hellwinkel Terrassen is now beginning. The two sustainable high-rise buildings made of wood will create 106 residential units on 8,000 square meters of living space close to the city centre. In the presence of Federal Building Minister Klara Geywitz, Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann, City Planning Councillor Kai-Uwe Hirschheide and the project managers turned the first sod.

Both buildings will have twelve storeys, most of the apartments will be barrier-free and 45 percent will be socially subsidized. With prefabricated solid wood elements and a regenerative energy supply, the Wolfsburg Woodscrapers are unique in Germany. Over their entire life cycle, the buildings are designed to bind more carbon dioxide than they release. The Woodscrapers have been awarded the German Sustainability Award and the Ecodesign Award for their sustainable construction.

"With the Woodscrapers, a lively and forward-looking part of our city is being created in the new, neighbourhood-oriented Hellwinkel Terrassen residential area," says Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann. "We are proud to be able to realize this nationally acclaimed construction project in Wolfsburg and thus enrich our cityscape with another urban development showcase project."

"The Woodscrapers also stand for social responsibility and environmental awareness. This combination fits perfectly with our ideas of modern and future-oriented building and living," adds First City Councillor and City Planning Councillor Kai-Uwe Hirschheide. "The inclusive approach to housing construction reflects the desire to create a diverse and vibrant community in which everyone can find a home."

Completion planned for 2026

The Woodscraper will have a roof terrace and communal outdoor areas for future residents. A café is also planned on the first floor. The city of Wolfsburg granted planning permission for GLS Bank's project back in the spring. Completion is currently expected in 2026.

In addition to sustainable construction, the integration of renewable energy sources is a key aspect of the Woodscraper. The buildings will use geothermal energy and photovoltaics to cover their energy needs. This not only helps to reduce CO2 emissions, but also demonstrates a commitment to a sustainable future. The project also aims to provide subsidized housing for people on low and middle incomes.
