City cuts down chestnut trees in the castle park

The city of Wolfsburg will be felling a total of four chestnut trees in the castle park in the first quarter of 2025 because they have cavities, cracks or rot. The damage means that the trees are no longer safe for traffic. The cause of the dramatic deterioration in the vitality of the trees is likely to have been the consequences of climate change and the prolonged drought between 2018 and 2020. The result was a fungal infestation that further attacked the wood and significantly increased the risk of breakage. The regenerative capacity of the chestnut trees, which are more than a hundred years old, is limited due to environmental factors. The damage can no longer be repaired. The project has been coordinated with the monument preservation authorities, the lower nature conservation authority and the culture division. The replacement planting will also be coordinated with the monument preservation authorities and is planned at a later date due to the necessary renovation of the old wall system in this area.
