Wolfsburg commemorates the liberation of Auschwitz
80 years on: Focus on the culture of remembrance and democracy
In his opening speech, Lord Mayor Dennis Weilmann explained: "Remembering Auschwitz is not just a look into the past, but a mission for the present. It reminds us to actively stand up against anti-Semitism, racism and populism in order to protect our democracy."
City Councillor for Youth, Education, Integration and Social Affairs, Iris Bothe, who moderated the event, emphasized the importance of the motto in her speech: "By remembering, we give the victims of the past a voice and the people of today the strength to stand up for a better future. The commitment of young people in particular, their thoughts and their attitudes encourage us to learn from the past and to protect the dignity of each individual."
The event offered a varied program: school students, Volkswagen AG trainees and local artists presented contributions that moved the audience. Speeches, a poetry slam and musical performances were particularly impressive, creating an emotional depth. In the foyer, the Market of Opportunities provided information about initiatives for democracy and a culture of remembrance.
The event was organized by the city of Wolfsburg in cooperation with the International Auschwitz Committee, the Association for the Promotion of the Youth Meeting Place Oświęcim/Auschwitz e. V., the Wolfsburg Association Remembrance and Future e. V. and the Hallenbad - Kultur am Schachtweg.
