Progress in the digital parking guidance system
Wolfsburg plans dynamic signage system

In order to reach visitors who do not have the Wolfsburg app, dynamic signage will be introduced in the city center. The existing signage of the outdated parking guidance system was already switched off at the beginning of 2024 and is now being replaced by a new CityInfo system.
A key advantage of the new system is the versatility of the LED displays, which are dynamically programmable and can be used as required. For example, closed parking garages can be temporarily removed from the display or information on city events, construction site information and detour recommendations can be shown.
Jens Hofschröer, Head of Economic and Digital Affairs, explains: "With the new parking guidance system, we are taking an important step towards a smart and sustainable city. We are enabling efficient traffic management and offering flexible, needs-based information for both parking facilities and events. As a result, we are significantly improving mobility in our city and making a further contribution to increasing the quality of life."
First City Councillor and City Planning Councillor Kai-Uwe Hirschheide emphasizes: "The modernization of the parking guidance system and the introduction of the CityInfo system are decisive measures to relieve inner-city traffic and adapt the urban infrastructure to the needs of the future. The dynamic LED displays give us the flexibility to provide up-to-date information in line with demand and thus keep citizens and visitors to our city informed in the best possible way."
With the introduction of the new signage, the number of previous 83 sign locations will be reduced to 38. Due to changes in the population's behavior, it is no longer necessary to provide comprehensive signage, as most people navigate into the city center using navigation systems or cell phones.
The planning of the system envisages using mainly the locations in the city centre that are already supplied with electricity in order to minimize the financial outlay. The investment costs for the planning and structural implementation of the CityInfo system amount to EUR 1,270,000, of which EUR 825,000 will be provided by the funding program. Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025.
