The "Lower Saxony Way" is an innovative and nationally recognized approach to nature and species conservation in Lower Saxony. It is an agreement between the state government, agricultural and environmental associations, which jointly pursue the goal of promoting biodiversity and protecting natural habitats - on a voluntary basis and in dialog. The path combines environmental protection with economic interests and shows how sustainable agriculture and effective nature conservation can be compatible.
Goals and measures
The Lower Saxony Way was launched in 2020 and comprises a comprehensive package of measures to preserve biodiversity and protect habitats. The core objectives include
- Habitat protection: moors, grassland and water bodies are specifically protected and renaturalized in order to preserve habitats for endangered species and promote sustainable water management.
- Preservation of biodiversity: The diversity of plant and animal species is to be preserved and promoted in order to safeguard the ecological balance.
- Promotion of nature-oriented agriculture: Agricultural businesses are supported in the implementation of environmentally friendly measures and receive targeted funding for sustainable farming.

In concrete terms, this means, among other things, reducing the use of pesticides, establishing flower strips and preserving orchards. In addition to these measures, there is a strong focus on protecting endangered species and their habitats.
Cooperation and financing
A special feature of the Lower Saxony Way is the close cooperation between nature conservation, agriculture and politics. This partnership minimizes conflicts between nature conservation and economic interests and promotes practical solutions. The measures are financed by state funds and subsidies, and agricultural businesses are appropriately rewarded for their contribution to nature and species conservation.
Performance review and further development
The success of the Lower Saxony Way is regularly reviewed. This allows progress to be documented and the measures to be further improved. The agreement stipulates that the objectives of the program will be continuously adapted and aligned with current challenges in nature and species conservation.
